Millennial’s Dilemma – a solo exhibition of Erik Parker

15.11.2018 - 07.12.2018
The Annex, 2/F Nan Fung Centre, 173 Des Veoux Road Central

Hong Kong Contemporary Art (HOCA) Foundation is proud to present Millennial’s Dilemma – 20 years into the career of Erik Parker from 1998 – 2018, the largest retrospective of the artist in Asia to date. The exhibition is a mid-career survey spanning 20 years of the artist’s creative journey, featuring 28 artworks typifying each stage of his iconic series. Ranging across works on paper and canvas from the start of Parker’s creative career to never before exhibited pieces from 2018, this exhibition guarantees a visual ecstasy that wows with Parker’s ironic and subversive artistic language that humorously take jabs at current themes such as media culture and climate change. Two rare works on paper from fellow artist KAWS’s personal collection will also add to a significant part of the show. The exhibition will take place at The Annex, 2/F, Nan Fung Centre, Central from 15 November to 7 December 2018.

The exhibition takes its name from Parker’s 2015 painting of the same title, which includes elements from each of his recognized series, characterized by heads, hieroglyphs, landscapes and still life. Aligned with an antiestablishment spirit, Parker gained inspiration from artists such as Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Henri Rousseau, Peter Saul, and Joseph Yoakum. Staying true to a common thread of rebelliousness as self-taught artists, Parker and these artists are both compelled to record and repulsed to critique the disarray around them.

Lauren Every-Wortman, Founding Member and Exhibition Curator, HOCA Foundation, says,“Viewing Parker’s artworks is like witnessing a visual freestyle rap that seamlessly combines elements of contemporary culture into a narrative flow of politics, music, internet memes, hallucinatory dreams, conspiracy theories, and the hieroglyphics of various subcultures. For HOCA’s exhibition, we have chosen a body of works to showcase what the artist has observed and recorded in his paintings over the last 20 years. Throughout his career, Parker has used an overwhelming amount of content to comment on the human condition – What it means to be human specifically in this time, in this place, and with these politics.”

Erik Parker says, “I am excited to be showing my works in Hong Kong with HOCA Foundation. In the world of information overload, my paintings record this endless amount of information over a long period of time. I hope whoever gets to spend time looking at my paintings can see something new in it every time. These are my records of the human condition and how it is to be a human, a person, living right here in the moment.”

Supporting the exhibition, HOCA Foundation will release a limited edition of collectable skateboards. 88 sets of three skateboards featuring the artwork Millennial’s Dilemma will be available exclusively on HOCA’s website and select I.T. stores across Hong Kong. During his stay in Hong Kong, the artist will sign limited editions of his skateboards at a special launch event.

To complement the works showcased in the exhibition, HOCA Foundation will publish a monographic book that delves further into the past 20 years of Parker’s oeuvre, charting the artist’s journey across a series of major exhibitions throughout his career. The artist will sign copies of the book during the exhibition’s opening reception on 15 November from 6pm to 8pm.

An artist talk presented in partnership with the Faculty of Arts of The University of Hong Kong, will take place on 16 November at 2pm inside the exhibition venue, featuring the artist Erik Parker, HOCA Foundation’s Founding Member and Exhibition Curator Lauren Every-Wortman, and Hong Kong fashion giant Federico Tan.
